While our daily lives are focused on what we can see, touch, and hear, the Bible reveals that there is an entire world existing alongside our own: the spiritual realm. For the believer, understanding this unseen dimension is not about fantasy, but about recognizing the spiritual reality that influences our physical world.
The Two Dimensions
The Scriptures teach that God created both the "heavens and the earth." This implies two distinct but overlapping realities. The spiritual realm is inhabited by God, His angels, and—as the Bible warns—fallen spiritual beings.
As the Apostle Paul explains in his letter to the church in Ephesus:
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." — Ephesians 6:12
The Role of Angels
Angels are described throughout the Bible as "ministering spirits" sent to serve those who will inherit salvation. They are messengers, warriors, and protectors. From the announcement of Jesus' birth to the protection of Daniel in the lions' den, angels act as intermediaries of God’s will in the physical world.
Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Because there is a spiritual world, there is also a spiritual conflict. The Bible does not want us to live in fear, but to live prepared. We are given "spiritual weapons" to navigate this realm. These include prayer, faith, and the Word of God.
The "Armor of God" (Ephesians 6:13-17) is the believer’s daily equipment:
Victory in Christ
The most important truth about the spiritual world is that it is not a fight between two equal powers. Jesus Christ has already secured the victory. The Bible tells us that when Jesus rose from the dead, He disarmed every spiritual authority.
"Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." — Colossians 2:15
How Should We Live?
Understanding the spiritual realm should change how we pray. When we pray, we are not just speaking into the air; we are engaging in a real, spiritual conversation that has the power to move mountains in the physical world.
