Diego Forlán – From Legendary Striker to Head Coach of La Celeste
The News Is Official: Forlán Takes Charge of Uruguay
Following Uruguay’s surprising group-stage exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Marcelo Bielsa resigned as head coach. The Uruguayan Football Association has appointed Diego Forlán as interim head coach through March 2027.
A dual role: Forlán will also lead Uruguay's Under-20 national team at the 2027 South American U-20 Championship in January. The federation will decide on a long-term appointment after its elections later this year.
Coaching staff: Forlán officially takes charge of La Celeste alongside assistant coaches Pablo Quiroga, Diego Reyes, and Diego Bermúdez.
Who Is Diego Forlán the Coach?
Playing career: Diego Forlán earned 112 international caps and scored 36 goals for Uruguay between 2002 and 2014. He won the Golden Ball at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, helped Uruguay capture the 2011 Copa América, and played for Manchester United, Villarreal, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan.
Coaching career: Forlán began coaching with Peñarol in 2020, managing 11 matches. In 2021, he took over Atenas in Uruguay's second division, where he coached 12 matches before leaving the club. Since then, he had not managed professionally and even competed in a professional ATP Challenger tennis tournament in Montevideo in 2024.
Why Him, and Why Now?
Post-World Cup crisis: Uruguay exited the 2026 FIFA World Cup after recording two draws and one loss in Group H:
-
Uruguay 1–1 Saudi Arabia
-
Uruguay 2–2 Cape Verde
-
Uruguay 0–1 Spain
The disappointing campaign sparked major changes within the national team.
The end of the Bielsa era: Marcelo Bielsa stepped down after Uruguay's early elimination. His high-pressing style earned praise but also criticism after the team's disappointing performance. Forlán now takes over with the mission of rebuilding the national team.
A unique opportunity: As a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Argentina and Paraguay, Uruguay is automatically qualified for the tournament. That gives Forlán several years to build a competitive squad without the pressure of qualifying matches.
Forlán's Challenge: Youth and Identity
The core squad: Ronald Araújo, Federico Valverde, Darwin Núñez, Manuel Ugarte, and Giorgian De Arrascaeta form the backbone of the current team, while José María Giménez remains captain.
Expected style of play: Forlán embraces Uruguay's famous garra charrúa while aiming to build a more balanced and attack-minded team. During his time at Peñarol, he said:
"Traveling and playing in different countries taught me that every nation has its own football culture. You have to adapt."
He is expected to maintain Bielsa's intensity while adding greater attacking efficiency and tactical balance.
Upcoming schedule: Uruguay will play international friendlies in September, October, and November 2026 before the South American U-20 Championship in January 2027 and additional international matches in March.
What This Means for Uruguay
-
A national icon: The 2010 World Cup Golden Ball winner now leads a new generation following the eras of Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani.
-
A chance for stability: Although appointed on an interim basis, the federation hopes one of Uruguay's greatest football legends can restore confidence and unity.
-
Looking ahead to 2030: With World Cup qualification already secured as a host nation, Forlán's mission is to restore Uruguay's identity and competitiveness before the centennial tournament.
